Life Story: “I was ready to live on the street. Then Hope for Kids found me.”

Tamirat Birhanu was only 10 years old when he lost his grandmother—the only person who cared for him after his parents’ divorce. With no one left to support him, Tamirat made a brave but heartbreaking choice: he started working as a shoe shiner alongside his 16-year-old brother.

For three years, he struggled to survive on the streets of Addis Ababa. The work couldn’t support them long-term. Hunger crept in. Nights were cold and lonely. The dream of going to school felt impossible—like a distant star.

Just as he was about to accept life on the streets forever, Hope for Kids met him. Today, Tamirat is living in a safe, caring shelter. He has food, clothing, and all the basic needs every child needs. Surrounded by loving adults, resting in a warm bed, and feeling cared for, he’s beginning to believe in a brighter future.

And now, for the first time in years, Tamirat is preparing to return to school—with a backpack full of hope.

Tamirat didn’t give up. He chose to fight for his survival, and we chose to walk with him every step of the way.
